This psychological thriller is another of the novels in free promotion in which I stumbled. The title itself is one that you cannot miss.Could the son of a serial killer become himself a serial killer? Apparently yes, in the opinion of the author, if the parent is suffering from some mental illness that may arise in his children.
Something special is the way the story is presented. The characters appear separately and only as you go ahead with the book you realize how they are connected together. For this reason it is difficult to mention the plot without spoilers. Part of the fun is to put the pieces together yourself as you read.
The novel is not very long and the characterisation of the characters is engaging. Personally I identified with the protagonist who suspects to be the son of a serial killer and fears to become himself a serial killer. I lived with him the terror with which he performed his actions. Ben is afraid of what he can be and ultimately he fears himself.
The ending of the story is in line with this fear.
I must say that unfortunately, although I have read the novel with great pleasure and very quickly, I found the ending a bit disappointing. It was what I expected without making any special effort of imagination. It’s a shame, because a subject as thorny as this one deserved a braver approach.
However, it is a good book that I would recommend it.

Son of a Serial Killer is a solid story. In it there is suspence, a few twists (dare I even say a bit of romance?). Though it was a quick read, (and I'm not complaining about that), I was pretty impressed with the amount of character development. After finishing the story and reflecting on it, I just have nothing to criticize. My only suggestion to Jams N Roses would be to perhaps indulge the fans of this book with a prequel focusing on the family history of the main character.
Awesome. I couldn't stop reading. I haven't read a book in a while. This has gotten me back reading. I couldn't have guessed the ending. several twists and turns. I would recommend this book very much.
Very suspenseful and entertaining read, with twist and turns that kept you guessing...only issue is I want to know more!!
The reason I only gave it three stars is that the writing style seems to need some polishing. It was fairly obvious once the sun realize The red hair belong to his mother. The rest of the events seemed fairly obvious. This author has a lot of promise, and I feel that he will develop his style. I was pleased to see that it was well edited, and with not too much more work I am sure that other books that come out will improve.
This book is a graphic exploration into the mind of a psychopath that infuses new meaning to the concept of dysfunctional family. The horror and bloodshed unleashed by psychopaths has been well-chronicled. This book probes the chaotic, disturbed mind of a killer, in the context of a network of loathsome family and social relationships. You can imagine what happens when nature and nurture are working against the protagonist, Ben Green. In pursuit of The Phantom, a serial killer who has eluded authorities for years, Detective Inspector Summers is an interesting character in her own right. She and her partner, DC Kite are led on a thrill ride of twists and turns as they try to determine if a new rash of killings is the work of The Phantom or a copy cat. If you like your whodunits graphic, gritty and fast-paced, this is a book for you. The action is nonstop with an ending that just might catch you off guard. Five Stars!
Bravo Mr. Roses. Son of a Serial Killer is a well crafted page-turner that kept me riveted right down to the twist at the very end.
The Phantom is a serial killer who has eluded London police for over ten years when Inspector Katie Summers is given the case of sixteen unsolved murders attributed to The Phantom. Summers is unique to the police force because her own father is one of The Phantom’s victims.
While the police track the serial killer, Ben Green is struggling with his own demons. His mother is mentally ill. His father has just died, and he caught his longtime girlfriend in bed with one of his friends. Into the darkness of his own muddled live bursts Eve, the woman who could make everything right for him.
Roses cleverly weaves the lives of his characters into a story full of unexpected twists and turns. I found the heroes lovable and detested the villains. This excellent mystery earns its five stars for being well written and engaging.
First off I have say, Jams N Roses is an awesome pen name.
Detective Inspector Summer was just assigned the case of her career, finding the serial killer known as The Phantom. The killer picks its victims at random and brutally stabs them to death, leaving no clues or motives. DI Summer was chosen by her superiors as she has a personal stake in finding this vicious killer. But is the killer who she thinks it is?
As we follow DI Summer and her investigations, we run across several different suspects. One of them is Ben Green, who's father just met an untimely death in a terrible bus accident. Ben is a timid man, with no self-worth and a girlfriend, with her own secret, that's trying to take advantage of him. But he has a dark side, one he never knew before, that keeps whispering to him, showing him dark reflections of himself. Enticing him to do terrible deeds. His mother has always had mental troubles herself, but to what depths has she fallen and how far will his dark side go? As the body count mounts, DI Summer races to the bloody end to find the truth.
The characters are well-drawn and we feel the anguish of Ben as he's confronted with his dark side and the truth about this mentally unstable mother and loving father. And we experience his joy at finally finding his soul mate, but is it too late?
This is a well-written dark tale, full of drama and plot twists. I give it 5 feathers.
