A Suitable Wife The Fitzgeralds of Dublin Book 2 edition by Lorna Peel Literature Fiction eBooks
I just loved this latest release from Lorna Peel! A Suitable Wife, set in 1881, continues the story of the Dublin doctor Will and his wife Isobel who we first meet in A Scarlet Woman. The book can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend that you pick up the first book to get the most of this most emotional and page turning read. The book delves deeply into relationships between the sexes and between social classes – not solely the relationship between the couple, but those between other family members and wider society. All is seen through the eyes of Will and Isobel whose love manages to hold everything together despite all of the many difficulties that come to pass – cue you will need a handkerchief! Isobel in particular is one strong character and the couple are well matched in terms of wisdom and strength. I have read a number of this author’s books and she excels at interweaving deep characterisations with an emotional and stirring plot line.
The revelations which come to light after the tragic death of his brother Edward in India throw a huge curveball into the lives of Isobel, Will and his family and lead to a great deal of soul searching for the family. This puts more stress on the relationship between Will and his father. Isobel’s past is difficult for some to accept but it is surprising what goes on behind the closed doors of others. Other characters have their own secrets and I enjoyed how the author weaved further revelations into the story which is full of twists and turns.
There are certainly some eye opening scenes concerning the couple, their relatives and social circle and the author has clearly carried out a great deal of research into medical issues and social mores of the time, research which helps make the book such compelling read,
The read totally sucked me in and transported me into the late Victorian era within Dublin, a time when women clearly played second fiddle to men and where appearances and perceived if not actual social mores are all important. Will and Isobel really go through the wringer, but their strength and love shine through and the read is above all an uplifting and life affirming read with a satisfying conclusion.
Recommended to readers who enjoy historical fiction with romance and strong characterisations and which gets to the heart of the social issues of the day.
Please note a copy of this book was given to me by the author for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

A Suitable Wife The Fitzgeralds of Dublin Book 2 edition by Lorna Peel Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Emotionally powerful! A MUST to read! 5 stars plus
'A Suitable Wife' is the second of Lorna Peel’s books that I have read and I wasn’t disappointed. Ms. Peel is a very talented storyteller. Each time, I read one of her novels, she knows how to captivate my interest. This emotional story has its ups and downs, but also some very touching moments. This author is truly a high quality writer!
Set in Dublin, Ireland 1881, it tells the touching journey of a young couple named Isobel and Dr Will Fitzgerald, which we met in the 1st story 'A Scarlet Woman'. I soon became fascinated with their story written with rich emotions. You will adore the new characters, some you'll like less. But you will understand why they are that way. Two special events will change the lives of the Fitzgerald family forever. As you read along, you'll notice that they are so kind to their family and friends, always ready to help them. I couldn't help crying as I followed them in their beautiful journey.
Ms. Peel's characters are endearing!
This book is so well written that I could not put it down, it soon became a real page-turner. Lovers of Irish tales, will surely love this Irish tale of true love, tenderness, trust, families ties and secrets. You may want to start with 'A Scarlet Woman'. I truly devoured it! I sincerely recommend you 'A Suitable Wife'. You are in for a treat!

What a great continuation of Will and Isobel’s story. Granted, this one is more about the conflicts and twists and turns in the lives of family and friends, yet Will and Isobel are at the heart of all the situations, even as they are forced to confront their own setbacks.
One of the most wonderful aspects of this story is the way in which Lorna educates readers about this period by having characters immersed in situations that have to be treated in accordance with the customs, laws, practices and available procedures of this time. Hence, pretty much all information and details shared are necessary for readers to know, and you come away from the story much more knowledgeable than when you began it.
However, this book is not just about knowledge and the going-ons of the time. It is filled with so much emotion by way of things happening to these characters that you can’t help but pull for or against them. Will and Isobel’s own challenges draw you into the ever-growing closeness between them a closeness you feel good about being a part of. The evolution of their growing love is something to behold and witness. In the first book, they had their secrets things that only the two of them knew. In this second book, they become even better secret keepers; not just of their own, but of the people’s whose lives intersect with theirs.
It feels like much was put in place in this book that will lead to the next one. Will and Isobel Fitzgerald are coming into their own as a strong and bonded unit and as two people who are starting to be what is destined to become an influential and trusted couple.
As a final note Understanding important parts of this story depends upon having read A Scarlet Woman, so you'll want to read that book first.
