To compare to the classic Holmes canon, 'The Italian Secretary' is closest to stories like 'Charles Augustus Milverton', or more appropriately, 'The veiled lodger'. These stories were light or even nonexistent in mystery in favor of presenting an adventure/horror story for Holmes to be involved with.Holmes is called in by his brother to investigate a few murders on royal grounds in Scotland. Holmes entertains the possibility of supernatural influence in the crimes, much to Watson's confusion. The story resembles Conan Doyle somewhat, but could have been a James Bond adventure set in 1890 without much effort. Not to say that's a bad thing.

The Italian Secretary A Further Adventure of Sherlock Holmes Caleb Carr 9780312939137 Books Reviews
My husband who is a big Sherlock Holmes fan really enjoyed the book.
I was an avid fan of Carr's Alienist and Angel of Darkness. This novel pales in comparison. Rather than equaling the efforts of Doyle, it leads the reader to an anticlimactic conclusion. I would like to see Carr return to the venue of the aforementioned works.
Love Caleb Carr books. Mysterious and written an old times.
I read about half of this novel and, I must say, it was more plodding than enjoyment. I really enjoyed The Alienist and, only a little less, The Angel of Darkness. The Italian Secretary was not up to this level, especially considering it featured Holmes and Watson. Portrayed here they were dry and shallow, and I simply couldn't embrace them. What little action happened in the first half of the book did not ignite my usual passion for a Sherlock Holmes story.
"Come Watson, the games afoot" - Holmes and Watson are off to Scotland at the behest of Holmes's brother Mycroff to save the Queen.
Caleb Carr's The Italian Secretary is a fun read that those who love period mysteries and the Sherlock Holmes stories will find hard to put down. While parts of Carr's uniqueness come through, he has mastered the rhythm and style of Arthur Conan Doyle enough to take one back to the old masterpieces.
Take it in hand for a time of enjoyment escaping from the pace of modern life and pressure of the moment. But a warning - it does keep one on the edge of their seat.
I was really disappointed with Caleb Carr's effort regarding this Sherlock Holmes pastiche. Like most readers here, I found Carr's The Alienist a very suspenseful, enjoyable read. When I stumbled upon my favorite consulting detective in the very capable hands of Carr, I thought I might find myself reading one of the very best Holmes stories to be produced. Alas, I found the story not very suspenseful and if it had not been penned by Carr, I would have put the book down halfway through the story never to be resumed,.
This was a Sherlock Holmes by a different author. I feel he followed the original Sherlock well. However I found myself not really enjoying the Watson/Sherlock dialogue.
As far as new Sherlock Holmes books go, this one is pretty good. Honestly, if I could give 3.5 stars I would, but since I cant, I'll err towards the positive since there are a lot of mediocre S.H. stories out there. I think my biggest disappointment is that I keep wanting to read something from Caleb Carr that is as gripping and uniquely wonderful as The Alienist. So far, everything I've read from him is good, but not on the same level.
